Rock Of Ages Coming To Toronto
October 16, 2009, 15 years ago
The Toronto Star has learned that the current Broadway hit Rock Of Ages, devoted to the music and madness of that tawdry, terrific decade, will start an open-ended run at the Royal Alexandra Theatre in May 2010.
A source high in the show's New York organization revealed that Mirvish Productions will present the show in association with the consortium of nearly two dozen producers who opened it on Broadway on April 7 of this year.
It's expected that most, if not all, of the cast will be Canadian, although there is no word yet whether there will be an attempt to duplicate New York's stunt casting of American Idol favourite Constantine Maroulis in the leading role.
Rock of Ages follows the same route as such popular shows as Mamma Mia! and We Will Rock You, in that in combines a storyline with existing song hits. In this case, the tunes are from the likes of JOURNEY, PAT BENATAR, WHITESNAKE and other '80s favourites. ("Don't Stop Believin'" is the singalong finale.)
The show will have played 220 performances on Broadway as of Friday, usually at close to capacity houses.
