The live auction at the Oak Hill School (in California) fundraiser was running late, delaying the start of a comedy set by Dana Carvey and Robin Williams, so Marin rock star SAMMY HAGAR decided to get it over with in a hurry.
He and his friend, the longhaired, bearded venture capitalist Larry Goldfarb, agreed to put up $50,000 each to buy out the entire auction, raising quick money for the Marin City school that serves autistic children.
"It wasn't showing off. I just got caught up in the moment," Hagar explained. "Autism gets very little attention, and I had just been made aware of the fact that it's controllable and treatable through good teachers and good programs. I thought, 'How wonderful.' I just got caught up in all that."Hagar pledged the money at the school's April 25 fundraising dinner and comedy show at the Regency Center in San Francisco.
