THE CURSED Guitarist Dan Lorenzo Discusses Upcoming New York Concert
May 18, 2007, 17 years ago
THE CURSED, featuring OVERKILL singer Bobby ‘Blitz’ Ellsworth and former HADED guitarist Dan Lorenzo have joined forces (along with bassist Job the Raver and drummer Mike Cristi), and will be celebrating the release of their debut, Room Full Of Sinners, with their first and last performance at the Highline Ballroom in New York City, on Sunday, May 20th.
Another extremely notable metal figure will also be present that night, as former ANTHRAX singer, JOEY BELLADONNA, will be opening the show with his group, BELLADONNA.
The Cursed’s Room Full Of Sinners will be released in Europe on May 25th and in the U.S. on June 26th, via Locomotive Records/Screaming Ferret Wreckords.
Bobby 'Blitz' Ellsworth and guitarist Dan Lorenzo issued an update on the upcoming The Cursed show on May 20th at Highline Ballroom that is slated to be hosted by Eddie Trunk.
Bobby "Blitz" Ellsworth stated , "The Cursed record was put together by Dan Lorenzo of NON-FICTION fame, and Hades fame. He is a riff monster. Also, he is a good friend of mine. We had Non-Fiction on the road with us in 1993. I thought they were just an absolute fantastic band. Dan has been hassling me to play with him for years. I did on a few riffs about a year ago, and wrote some lines for it. It just started taking off. We got Job The Raver from MURDER 1 and Mike Cristi, also from Non-Fiction fame. We said, we know it is going to be say different from Overkill. It was obviously started just for fun. It was a garage band, taken to the next level, like most bands start. For me to do it, as an absolute side project, it feels really good because it is not Overkill by any means. There are similarities with regards to vocals in some cases. The approach and the songwriting are taken from a much more rock and roll perspective. For the first time in my life, I was able to write lyrics about the softer sex. I don't think I have written a song about a woman in Overkill. I found out The Cursed have written eight songs on my perspective on the way I feel in different ways and what I have witnessed. So it really becomes in all senses, fresh material for me. The lyrical content, the subject matter, the approach to the singing, the type of songs that I am singing, too are much more melodic and just a hell of a lot of fun. It still has that dirty, don't play it for your mother kind of feel, behind the presentation of the record. The Cursed has been a lot of fun for me. We look forward to The Cursed release, Room Full Of Sinners."
Guitarist Dan Lorenzo recently spoke to Boston writer Deb Rao to discuss the upcoming The Cursed first and last show on May 20th at Highline Ballroom in New York.
Q: Dan, Tell us about the upcoming The Cursed show on May 20th in New York City at the Highline Ballroom. Is it true it is your first and last show?
A: "It is true. As far as today. We did 6 songs last month at the LaMour reunion. That was a "secret" The Cursed show. Deb, you know and I know things change. The KISS reunion lasted way longer than originally announced. Overkill just signed a new deal. They will be super busy. You never know. Right now this is it though."
Q: Is Eddie Trunk going to be hosting the event?
A: "It depends. Only if he promises to play my solo CDS more often. Even though he hates the Knicks, Eddie is still a good guy. Even though he enjoys listening to TESLA. I still like Eddie. Yeah, Eddie will be there hosting."
Q: Are you happy with the response the debut single, 'Evil In The Bag' is receiving?"
A: "In a word, no. It's a hit single, but nobody knows it yet. Most people are not that smart. Most people have terrible taste in music. Now, this is just my opinion. We're probably not heavy enough for thrash fans, and we're too heavy for emo fans. The CD is great though. It's a classic heavy rock album."
Q: How did you want to make Room Full Of Sinners differ from your previous projects?
A: "Well, it was time for me to find a different vocalist to interpret my riffs. I'm proud of my all my past work. This CD was all about jamming with friends. It was fun. It was a longer recording processthan I'm used to, but now that the cd is about to finally drop I'm pumped."
Q: Actually I can hear some 80's influences. Bobby kind of reminds me of early Steven Tyler and AEROSMITH. When you went into the recording studio, did everything come together pretty easily?
A: "Absolutely. This CD to me sounds like old Aerosmith meets Sabbath. I'm not even a huge Sabbath fan. I much prefer Aerosmith, KISS, AC/DC, SLAYER, NWA - shit like that. Everybody thinks I worship Sabbath, but they had a few too many trippy jams for me. I do love a bunch of their songs, but I worship the old Aerosmith. Blitz does have a bit of Tyler and Bon Scott in him, and you hear it on The Cursed CD."
Q: How did The Cursed evolve? How you known Bobby forever and always wanted to work with him?
A: "I've known Blitz for a long time. In 1993 he took my old band Non-Fiction out on tour in America and Europe. I hit it off with him and DD Verni more than the other guys. Savatage were on that tour too in Europe. Great guys. Blitz, myself and DD bonded overthe Knicks. DD is a sarcastic prick like I am! Blitz is a fucking stand up comedian. A true character. He probably thinks I'm a bit quirky, but we get along great on a personal level. Plus him and Peter from PIGMY LOVE CIRCUS were the only two people over thirty who understood my first solo CD. I had Bobby sing a couple lines on my 2nd solo CD, Nice Being Alone. Then I started to bother him, 'Let's do a project together... we'll call it Blitz'. He said we should do a "band" project, not a Blitz solo project. He came to my home in December of 2005. We sat in my loft and he was blown away."
