The original ROLLING STONES tongue icon, a JIMI HENDRIX guitar and a black bustier worn by MADONNA have sold for hundreds of thousands of pounds at an auction of rock memorabilia in London.
A spokeswoman for promoter Magnum Communications said that Rolling Stones guitarist Ronnie Wood and former bass player Bill Wyman both watched the tongue artwork sell for £250,000.
It was one of 160 lots sold at the It's More Than Rock 'n' Roll auction at the Sound venue in London's Leicester Square, fetching a total of £860,000.
A Fender Stratocaster guitar owned by Jimi Hendrix went for £60,000 and a black bustier worn by Madonna on her Who's That Girl tour sold for £5,000.
The Magnum spokeswoman said she understood that MARVIN GAYE's handwritten musical manuscripts went to a family member for an undisclosed amount. They had been expected to be sold for £150,000.
They had been given to a friend and forgotten about until they recently resurfaced in London.
ELVIS PRESLEY's 1960s Cherry Sunburst guitar fetched £20,000 and JOHN LENNON's beige mohair 1963 stage suit worn at the London Palladium venue sold for £10,000.
The spokeswoman said a percentage of the profits would go to the Cancer Research UK charity.
About 150 people attended the auction, including members of bands THE CLASH and THIN LIZZY.
Others placed bids over the telephone or online.
“There were a few private investors over the phone from the United States, but most of these items stayed in the hands of people from the industry,” the spokeswoman said.
