Once again, the BraveWords team joined the black shirted horde, departing on the Freedom Of The Seas, immersed in four days of virtually round-the-clock heavy metal. Leaving from the port of Miami, this is essentially a cruise to nowhere. OK, we put into port, in the Dominican Republic, for about 5 hours, but the rest of the time, it's music, on the high seas.

Day one is shorter than most, as the ship doesn't depart until 5pm (that's when the music starts) and "only" features performances on three stages, the pool deck (where they build a giant outdoor venue, right over the existing swimming area) isn't operational until Day 2. No matter, top flight shows from Kataklysm, who did a Serenity In Fire set, Einherjer, playing deep cuts, the amazing Halo Effect, visual hi-jinks from Warkings, Blind Guardian and the eccentricities of Fleshgod Apocalypse were first day highlights.

All the bands play twice, so this is just a precursor of what's to come. A full report will follow, once we've reacquainted our sea-legs to dry pavement. In the meantime, here's a small visual glimpse of what took place.
