BraveWords.com Presents The Brave Picks Top 30 Of 2010 ... #16 Revealed!
December 16, 2010, 14 years ago
We continue to count down the finest slabs of metal from the last year, as chosen by the devout scribes here at BW&BK;/BraveWords.com. As with previous years, each writer was asked to pick his top 20 albums of the year (no live records, compilations or covers etc...). We perform a little behind-the-scenes metal math and voila, we have our list! We'll be counting down the Top 30 all month - yup, one a day until we get to New Year's - yes, we're aware that December has 31 daze but we thought we'd let you hang until January 1st!
It's time for #16! Drum roll please...
#16 - ARMORED SAINT - La Raza (Metal Blade)
Long-running traditional metallers ARMORED SAINT released La Raza in March, the band's first release since 2001's Revelation. The album's foundation was laid back in 2008 when Joey Vera and John Bush began writing new material for what would become La Raza and the album was completed in December at Tranzformer Studios in Burbank, CA. The album was produced by bassist Joey Vera, and engineered by Bryan Carlstrom and his assistant John Nuss. Recording was mostly done with analog equipment and the final album mix was delivered on 1 inch tape. This gives La Raza the most organic sound as possible.
In his BraveWords.com review, Robert Deutsch wrote: Choosing to handle production and co-mixing duties for La Raza, Vera stuck with recording in analog, mixing down into analog and only utilizing ProTools as a means for taping the material, taking a back seat to its modern god-like status in recording studios (and mothers' basements) across the gamut. Talk about returning to the band’s roots. The best part? It pays off; there’s no noticeable conundrum between La Raza and when we last heard from Armored Saint. That’s probably why La Raza sounds like it could have swapped spots in the discography with the last few Armored Saint releases and not have missed much of a beat.
