BRUCE DICKINSON On His Battle With Throat Cancer - "I Enjoy Talking About It Because You Kind Of Demystify It A Little Bit For People; It's A Scary Thing"

On  January 18th, Iron Maiden frontman Bruce Dickinson brought his spoken word show to Orlando, Florida. During the Q&A portion of the show, which features Dickinson answering questions submitted by audience members, he touched on his 2014 battle with throat cancer and offered advice to people who are going through cabncer treatment.

Dickinson: "I would say embrace the treatment and always remember the... I don't know what your cancer is. I don't know the individual circumstances, I'm not a doctor, so I'm not gonna make any predictions. I can't do anything like that, nor would I, because it's very private, but I have to say that the therapies that people are coming up with now are so on the edge and successful that you really do stand a very good chance. Half of us are gonna get cancer and it's not a death sentence anymore, and you can deal with it. The things they have to do to your body to get rid of it are getting better and better and better as we go down the line. They did some nasty things to my body. I'm lucky I'm completely clear of it and everything.

I only really talk about it when I come to do these shows because people want to know. I quite enjoy talking about it because you kind of demystify it a little bit for people. It's a scary thing."

Dickinson launched the North American leg of his spoken word tour, An Evening With Bruce Dickinson, earlier this month in Florida. Split into two parts, the first section of the show sees Bruce taking a humorous and often satirical look at the world from his own very personal perspective, treating the audience to private insights into his drive and ambition, peppered with plenty of Maiden anecdotes, and a myriad of other experiences encompassing not just the giddy heights but also the extreme lows, told first-hand in his inimitable anarchic style, punctuated with photographs and sometimes even erupting into song a-capella, to illustrate a point.

The final section of the evening is devoted entirely to a Q&A session, with the opportunity to pose questions on any subject whatsoever. As Bruce’s answers will all be completely improvised – the more left-field and quirky the question, the more interesting and compelling the response is likely to be!
