BW&BK Exclusive: CHARLIE DOMINICI - "I’m Very Proud Of The Fact DREAM THEATER Thought Enough Of My Ideas To Actually Use Them (On When Dream And Day Unite)"
April 13, 2008, 16 years ago
In a recent interview with BW&BK; scribe Carl Begai, DOMINICI / ex-DREAM THEATER vocalist Charlie Dominici discussed the creative process for the new album, O3: A Trilogy - Part 3. According to Charlie the new album was a band effort rather than a case of him playing director.
“It was even more like that on this new record," he says of getting his bandmates involved in the songwriting. "I invited the whole band to participate. Last time it was me, Brian (Maillard/guitars) and and Yan (Maillard/drums) who wrote everything, and this time everyone was involved in the writing. When I joined Dream Theater they had 70% of the material written (for When Dream And Day Unite), but there was stuff that needed to be changed or added. I added melody lines to most of the songs, there are parts in ‘A Fortune In Lies’ that didn’t exist before I joined the band. I contributed some musical ideas to that album and I’m very proud of the fact those guys thought enough of my ideas to actually use them. That says a lot and I take it as a compliment, and that’s why I’ve told the guys in Dominici they shouldn’t be afraid to offer input. If their ideas are good we’ll use them, if we don’t use them don’t get upset. And they came up with some great ideas for Part 3.”Watch for the complete story in BW&BK; #111.
