BW&BK; spoke to CANDLEMASS bassist Leif Edling recently about the process of replacing longtime singer Messiah Marcolin with SOLITUDE AETURNUS frontman Robert Lowe on their new album, King Of The Grey Islands, out now via Nuclear Blast.

“We listened to about 30 people from Sweden and Scandinavia, and about 80 people in all,” explains Edling about the search. “About 60 guys from Europe and the states and from South America, even. No big names. Just a whole bunch of very unknown guys (laughs). But we didn’t find anyone that was 100% suitable or just blew us away. We auditioned a couple of guys in Stockholm, and they were OK but not brilliant. And a week after that, when we were like, ‘So, what are we going to do now?’, I had this email from Heather Hunt, Robert’s girlfriend in Dallas saying, ‘Why don’t you contact Robert? He might be interested.’ And then all the pieces fell in place. And as a matter of fact, a week before that, I had bought Alone, the new album from Solitude Aeturnus, and I listened to Robert and thought, fuck, he seems so good, it’s a shame… not a shame, but unfortunately for us, he’s in Solitude Aeturnus. And then a couple days later I got this email from Heather. And I think he’s perfect. He sings with such emotion and feeling, and with a lot of power. I think he fits like a glove.”

Watch for more of BW&BK;'s chat with Edling in BW&BK; #106, due out in late August.
