DAVID LEE ROTH Missing In Action; CBS Radio Cancellation Rumored
March 29, 2006, 18 years ago
Billboard Radio Monitor (billboardradiomonitor.com) has issued the following report from Mike Boyle:
Listeners to CBS Radio’s DAVID LEE ROTH morning show in New York, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Cleveland, and Dallas woke up Wednesday morning (March 29) to WFNY (Free FM) New York midday personalities JV & Elvis filling in, while listeners in Boston and West Palm Beach woke up to music.
At Roth’s New York flagship, PD Mark Chernoff had no comment about why the morning man was missing in action on what would have been his third day broadcasting live from Miami's trendy South Beach. Chernoff wouldn't comment on whether the morning man will return on Thursday.
Calls to CBS Radio officials seeking comment have yet to be returned.
WFNY nighttime personality Booker was filling in for JV and Elvis in middays on Wednesday, with part-time personality Julie Slater set to fill in for Booker, playing music--as the station does on weekends.
Meanwhile, DCRTV.com (www.dcrtv.com) has issued the following report from Dave Hughes:
A Wednesday link on Drudge crashed our main dcrtv.com server. From DCRTV's Rumorama. Not confirmed! Repeat: Not confirmed! But DCRTV hears that CBS Radio has removed the low-rated David Lee Roth from his post-Howard Stern morning slot at the company's stations in NYC, Philadelphia, Boston, and Pittsburgh. Just in time for the spring ratings sweep, which starts tomorrow.
"JV And Elvis" now airs in NYC, at least. CBS recently flipped Philadelphia rocker WYSP, which carried Stern in morning drive, to "Free FM" all-talk with Roth in mornings. And it has plunged from 4th to 19th place in the ratings...Stay tuned for updates on this situation.
As reported earlier today courtesy of a posting at Launch Radio Networks from Gary Graff, Roth will be singing VAN HALEN songs again this spring, but not with the band. Roth is featured on three tracks on Strummin' With The Devil, a collection of Van Halen songs done in bluegrass style that will be released on June 6th. Roth joins the JOHN JORGENSON BLUEGRASS BAND for twangy renditions of 'Jump' and 'Jamie's Cryin'', as well as a special radio edit of the latter.
The album also features DAVID GRISMAN AND SONS, BLUE HIGHWAY, MOUNTAIN HEART, IRON HORSE and others offering new interpretations of such Van Halen favorites as 'Runnin' With The Devil', 'Hot For Teacher', 'Panama', 'Eruption', 'Ice Cream Man', 'Dance The Night Away' and 'Ain't Talkin' 'Bout Love'.
In addition to his country and bluegrass credits, Jorgenson has also recorded and toured with ELTON JOHN.
In the liner notes, the Indiana-born Roth explains that "my roots were always kind of country - not the same country as my first band. Their flag had windmills. Mine had BBQ pit and a shot glass."
