Heavy Metal Examiner's Mark Morton has issued an interview with DYING FETUS bassist / vocalist Sean Beasley (ex-SADISTIC TORMENT). The following is an excerpt:

Q: When you were coming up in Sadistic Torment, did you have to rely largely on out-of-state shows for your exposure?

A: "Oh yeah, definitely. I remember that from back when I was in that band. We used to struggle a lot, and we’d see Dying Fetus going all over the place for shows, so we kinda picked up on that. They were always touring, even way back then."

Q: They were always a very DIY band, and I think that is one of the primary qualities that helped them become a force in the metal scene. They’ve always seemed to rely on themselves rather than outside assistance to make their mark. With Relapse on board with you guys, how much of that DIY element is still prevalent?

A: "Not nearly as much really. Like now, we haven’t been doing any off-shows at all, just straight touring. We’ve been really busy. From the studio and touring before the studio, going to Australia, doing the LA Murderfest, we’ve been touring ever since we finished the new record."

Q: Yeah, Relapse has really had your guys’ backs for some time now. They really keep you on relentless road-running.

A: "Yeah, but that is actually more our booking agent than Relapse. That is not to say that Relapse doesn’t have a hand in what’s going on. They definitely want us to stay busy, continue touring, to sell more albums, and what have you."

Q: Well, what I found really interesting is that the promotion for Descend Into Depravity is that Relapse has instigated some really creative advance marketing to help pre-sell the album, what with the various formats and t-shirt packages. It seems Relapse has a real handle on creative salesmanship that you don’t see many other labels picking up.

A: "Yeah, the pre-orders and the contests on the MySpace page. They made their page look like ours and basically gave us some great advertising."

Q: I think it’s really cool that this is happening now, because ten years ago, who would go through this kind of effort to sell an extreme metal band?

A: "Yeah, I was kinda shocked, too, but it seems like it is working. The album only just came out, but the pre-orders were actually shipped last week."

Q: Dying Fetus is one of those rare, classic-era death metal bands that has constantly been able to attract a younger demographic audience as time goes on. What do you think that is attributed to? Is it the intensity of the music, your unconventional touring partners, or is it the general fascination/repulsion of the band’s name?

A: "I think now, it’s been more that the small-metal bands, breakdown metal bands, or whatever you want to call them, are getting bigger now. A lot of them say they listen to us, so I think that is probably one of the biggest reasons – the kids are liking us, too, which is good."
