Exclusive - BW&BK In Conversation With MÖTLEY CRÜE's Nikki Sixx
February 12, 2009, 15 years ago
During the '80's, no band lived life larger than MÖTLEY CRÜE. The bad boys of metal thrived and survived on living on the edge and bringing their raw, theatric stage show to the masses hungry for their unique brand of music born and bred on the Sunset Strip. A place where rules were made to be broken and bands and metal fans lived in excess and over the top never conforming to the 9 to 5 daily routine.
In 2009, Mötley Crüe find themselves once again at the top of their game. With a successful run of Crüe Fest 2008 and details regarding Crüe Fest 2009 soon to be revealed, Mötley Crüe is bringing their unique blend of metal and theatrics to the fans on their current Saints of Los Angeles Winter Tour in progress. Also, Mötley Crüe is taking some of the top bands in music today on the road with them this winter including winners of the Guitar Center Competition THE LAST VEGAS, HINDER and THEORY OF A DEADMAN.
Mötley Crüe bassist NIKKI SIXX has checked in with BraveWords.com correspondent Deb Rao regarding the current Mötley Crüe Winter S.O.L.A. Tour, Saints Of Los Angeles CD, and the legacy of Mötley Crüe.
Q: During the '80's, Mötley Crüe ruled the top of the charts and sold out arenas during the metal genre. In 2009, once again Mötley Crüe is selling arenas out all over the country. What is the secret to the bands legacy and longevity?
Sixx: "I think taking the good with the bad and standing the test of time, simply sometimes by only still standing."
Q: Mötley Crüe are currently on the road in support of your latest album, Saints Of Los Angeles. Would you say that Saints Of Los Angeles is a concept album? Also, how does it feel to be performing these songs to a whole new generation of Mötley Crüe fans?
Sixx: "We're not playing the album as a whole. I think the music fits in well with our set and seems to get a great response from new and original fans. I'm personally very proud of S.O.L.A."
Q; Nikki, How does it feel to see kids that are only in their teens at your concerts today singing the lyrics to your earlier hits, who were not even born in the late '80's when Mötley Crüe topped the charts during that genre?
Sixx: "It's what every band dreams of, being able to pass the torch from generation to generation. I've seen it with AEROSMITH, U2, and THE ROLLING STONES. And hopefully now we will be stepping into a new decade of new fans enjoying what we do live and hearing not only our past work, but enjoying the new tunes too."
Q: What do you enjoy most about performing live, and what do you enjoy most about producing bands like The Last Vegas that are currently on tour with you? You have the best of both worlds performing and producing.
Sixx: "I am the first to admit, I don't like touring. I love my time on stage, but being away from my family and creative hot spot makes me feel unsettled. On the other hand, seeing all those hands in the air, singing all the lyrics that I put so much of my heart into does pretty much blows my mind every night. So it's only after the show till the next day when we walk onstage again that’s hard. I love helping young bands, musically, and to understand how to operate not only as a band but also as a business. To be in a band in 2009 you, Have To Understand, how every aspect of being in a band works. Explaining everything from what the lawyers are really there for, to making sure you milk every last drop out of your choices. It does make me proud to see people be successful, and I am always willing to help young artist who are willing to listen."
