Faith No More drummer Mike Bordin recently spoke with radio.com about the band's reunion and their highly anticipated new album, Sol Invictus. An excerpt is available below.
Radio.com: Were you nervous about how you’d be received when you first reunited?
Bordin: "No. No. And the reason why is maybe because we didn’t think about it (laughs). And maybe the reason we didn’t think about if 5000, or 50,000 people, would show up at the shows. I like what I do, I like the music I play and I like f—in’ playing it. I get more excited than I do nervous. I get more pumped up than I do intimidated.
Radio.com: I imagine that’s true and that you don’t get intimidated easily; you were the guy who spent a summer sitting in for Bill Ward when Ozzy and Black Sabbath reunited for the Ozzfest in 1997.
Bordin: "The great Bill Ward! The Sabbath thing, for me…I played Black Sabbath songs for years as part of Ozzy’s sets. On the ’97 Ozzfest, we did an Ozzy show, and then Sabbath came out and did a set. For those guys, at that stage of the game, I don’t think that that’s the way that Sabbath would’ve chosen [to come back]. I don’t think it was the ideal presentation for that music for those guys. So those were challenging circumstances to go in there and do that. But did I love doing it? Man, I loved it! I loved trying to “swing” the way Bill did."
Radio.com: I’ve interviewed Tony Iommi and Geezer Butler in the years since, and they both said nice stuff about your playing, which I’m sure you’ve heard before….
Bordin: "You know, I really haven’t. No, never. I just don’t follow up on s— like that. I try to keep things pure and honest, and what I mean by that is, I just take my best swing, but I don’t look and see where the ball goes. And the only way I can really do that is to not trip on the fallout. Respect to all of those guys, they’re legends. These are people who I put as a very, very close second to Jimi Hendrix. That was as high, musically, as it will ever get for me, playing with those guys. That’s what they’ve meant to me. I loved my days playing with Ozzy, and playing with Sabbath is an honor I’ll put on my tombstone. I’m a Sabbath guy, I grew up with them.
