Two intruders broke into JIMI HENDRIX' former London home and got drunk on bottles of wine.
The men smashed into the top floor of the four-storey apartment in Brook Street, Mayfair, before scaling the roof as police arrived, shortly before 11pm on Saturday night.
But if they thought they were going to relive a piece 1970s music history - they were in for a surprise.
Because the rooms where the rock legend lived for nine months in 1968 have since become the kitchen and toilet area for volunteers at the Handel House Museum, situated next door.
And unlike Hendrix, who infamously died of a drugs overdose aged just 27, George Frideric Handel lived an altogether more sober life composing sacred works such as the Messiah under the patronage of King George II.
Zed Jameson, 19, a waiter at the Hush Restaurant, who saw the events unfold when he stepped out for a cigarette break, said: “It was pretty dramatic. There were two men in the apartment, and when police arrived, they scrambled onto the ledge and climbed a pipe to get on to the roof.
“The men must have panicked as they gave themselves up pretty fast. One of them was completely pissed and the other was wearing a beige coat.”The Hendrix flat now sits above a Jo Malone perfume shop, on the ground floor, and two floors of exhibition space for the Handel House Museum, which hosts a selection of valuable manuscripts and printed scores.
But Martin Wyatt, the museum's deputy director, says the burglars did not have Handel’s memorabilia in mind.
