From Zero is Linkin Park creating their identity from scratch:

Mike Shinoda: "The experience of writing From Zero was almost like inventing the band while you're inventing the album. Like figuring out what the band is while you're figuring out what it sounds like. As we started the process of writing the songs, we didn't know who was gonna play the songs. Like there were moments where it was like people suggested all kinds of crazy things. Like there was one suggestion at one point that we should do like a competition TV show. And the person who wins the show is the singer, which would never have worked for our band. But that's a version of that like, okay, that doesn't work. But there, there are other things like, okay, what if there's more than one singer? What if it's really just me? And then there are a few people who are featured and the few people come out on tour with us and they sing like back up, but they only sing a few songs? What if it's two singers and me? What if the guitarist is, you know, there's so many things that could be, and those things all just like slowly like faded away while we were making the album as we were writing and the songs were coming into focus, like the band just became obvious. Like who it was became obvious."

How Linkin Park decided to return & make new music:

Mike Shinoda: "The idea of bringing Linkin Park back, it wasn't an idea. It wasn't like, we didn't say, 'Let's find a singer.' We didn't say, 'Let's make an album.' We didn't say, 'Let's get the band together.' We just started. The very first thing, I think, the beginning was Joe and I had, we had like a breakfast together and he was like, 'You know, I wanna like hang out some more. I wanna like, maybe we should do some creative stuff, like just start messing around.' As simple as that sounds like it was really important. Like we weren't doing that at that point. So we were, we got together with me and him and Dave and then eventually more people. And then eventually that would turn into like me bringing Colin and Emily in separately and then together and then more often. And the album came together, the album became an album while the band became a band.
