LYNYRD SKYNYRD Drummer Michael Cartellone Talks Art

LYNYRD SKYNYRD drummer Michael Cartellone (ex-DAMN YANKEES) spoke with John J. Moser from Mcall.com about his love for painting and how he balances both art forms.
"The art and the music are two halves of a whole for me,'' Cartellone says. "They've co-existed most of my life and also have fed off of each other and complemented each other and enhanced each other most of my life. Even though my entire body was drumming, I had my big toe still sitting in a jar of paint."It wasn't until 2004, when he was headed back on the road with Skynyrd that Cartellone says he decided to take art supplies on the road with him.
"As Skynyrd travels, we have a lot of down time just kind of hanging out in hotel rooms. And I thought, 'You know what? I should really make better use of this than just watching pay-per-view - not that there's anything wrong with that,'' he says with a laugh.
That started a collection of five paintings called The Road Series, in which Cartellone captured "life on the road with Lynyrd Skynyrd,'' including the view from behind his drum kit and looking down the road from a tour bus.
Cartellone says he thought the music-related paintings were ''the perfect time to really put it out there publicly and introduce myself in a grand scale to the world as a painter.''
