IRON MAIDEN guitarist Adrian Smith spoke with The Times Of India recently about a number of topics. A few excerpts from the chat follow:

The Times Of India: What's kept the band together for 30 years?

Smith: "The fact that we rock non-stop. We're a family. There are differences, but there's the chemistry."

The Times Of India: How has Maiden maintained its unique sound over the years?

Smith: "We don't follow trends, we play true to ourselves."

The Times Of India: How is the Maiden sound different?

Smith: "Our music is melodic. Pretty and quiet along with the heavy. It's a quiet you'll remember. Powerful but not easy to bring about."

The Times Of India: Heavy metal music of your time and now; what's new?

Smith: "Metal has changed beyond recognition. When I was 18, I couldn't think of records. You carried your own equipment, you slept with it. You had a few clubs. Kids now have records at 18 and they've studios at home! Their exposure to rock is massive. There is talent, and opportunity is certainly more."

The Times Of India: You're a frontline guitarist. What's your take on younger guitarists?

Smith: "For many the guitar is an instrument of pure aggression rather than melody. There's a place for aggression but melody should contrast it. Like I said, you'll remember the quiet."

The Times Of India: Which guitarists were exceptional?

Smith: "Steve Vai, Satriani, Jimi Hendrix... stuff of genius."
