Nick Simmons - "KISS Isn’t My Parent, Gene Simmons Is"
June 9, 2009, 15 years ago
Fangoria spoke to KISS legend Gene Simmons son Nick Simmons about a number of topics including his new comic book series, Incarnate, coming in August from Radical Comics. Here are a few excerpts from the chat:
Fangoria: Some of us always wondered what it would be like to have KISS as a parent, and we got our wish with the A&E; reality show, Gene Simmons Family Jewels. How real was that show anyway?
Simmons: "I’ve always wondered why people phrased it like that. How can a band be someone’s parent? KISS isn’t my parent, Gene Simmons is (as far as we know). You wouldn’t tell Liv Tyler that AEROSMITH was her father, would you? Joe Perry had little to do with her conception, I’m pretty sure it was just Steven and her mother. We hope. Anyway, to get to the actual question - I can’t speak for the rest of the family when they’re off doing their own thing, but anyone on the crew will tell you how much I despise faking anything on the show. When they first approached me with the show they tried, and I made sure they were all aware that I wasn’t going to pretend to be someone I wasn’t. The show gives us some opportunities to do things we might not have normally done, but that’s just the real effect the show has had on our lives anyway, like going to premieres and events and having more money for vacations and stuff like that. So when it comes to me, no faking."
Fangoria: You and your dad share a small passion for comic books. Did he get you into them or the other way around?
Simmons: "I’ve always been into drawing ever since I could hold a crayon in my grubby little hands. But yeah, he had a big influence on my interests - introduced me to all the classics, Kirby, Lee, all the gods of old. The independent part is my interest in Manga. Dad knows the classics like Astro Boy, but I know the really good recent stuff like Berserk, etc."
