TMZ caught up with SCOTT WEILAND at a Los Angeles airport and asked about STONE TEMPLE PILOTS' announcement earlier this week, saying that they have officially terminated the singer.

Stone Temple Pilots lied about firing Weiland as a publicity stunt, in order to hype an upcoming concert tour... so says Weiland, who insists the band is still 100% together.

Says Scott: "STP is not broken up. It's a whole thing to try to boost ticket sales."

When asked why he thought STP would have issued the statement, Weiland comments: "They've done a lot of that stuff in the past before, it's just kind of the way they roll."

Mid-week, Weiland issued the following statement: "I learned of my supposed “termination” from Stone Temple Pilots this morning (Wednesday) by reading about it in the press. Not sure how I can be “terminated” from a band that I founded, fronted and co-wrote many of its biggest hits, but that’s something for the lawyers to figure out. In the meantime, I’m looking forward to seeing all of my fans on my solo tour which starts this Friday."

Updates to follow. Weiland's tour itinerary can be found at this location.
