STRYPER Frontman MICHAEL SWEET - "We're Really Not A Christian Band"

Stryper's Michael Sweet and his brother Robert Sweet recently guested on Fozzy frontman Chris Jericho's official podcast, Talk Is Jericho. Check out the interview below.

Chris Jericho: "Stryper killed it onstage at the Chris Jericho Rock & Wrestling Rager At Sea Triple Whammy last October, and again during their live Talk Is Jericho podcast appearance on the ship! Brothers Robert and Michael Sweet tell stories from their early days including hanging out on the Sunset Strip in Hollywood, changing the band’s name from Roxx Regime to Stryper, what inspired the Stryper name, who influenced their song lyrics, and how they were able to tour with mainstream metal and rock bands during the 80s. They talk about the difference between Christian Rock and being Christians IN a rock band, how they had to constantly fight against being pigeonholed, and what MTV did their for their popularity and sales in the era of DialMTV. They also have some great tales about stealing road signs to hang in the studio, throwing bibles to fans at live shows, and being mobbed and arrested in Australia!"

Following is an excerpt from the interview.

Michael Sweet: "I recently, in the past few yeas, said quite a few times, and it's really caused a stir, that we're not a Christian band. And people say, 'What?' But we're Christians in a rock band. And there's a difference. We weren't brought up in the church; we were brought up on the streets of LA playing Gazzarri's, Troubadour, Whisky, and we became Christians. We just continued doing what we always did, but with a different message. We're really not a Christian band, but if people wanna call us a Christian band, that's okay. I view us as just a rock band that decided to take a different path."
