Greece's Rockpages has issued an interview with THE 69 EYES frontman, Jyrki, conducted prior to the band's show in Athens, Greece a couple of weeks ago. The following is an excerpt:
Q: After two great albums like Devils, and Angels, did you feel any pressure to come up with a worthy follow up, and make a very good album?
A: "We wanted to do something totally different, not to follow the two previous albums at all.“Devils started a new period for The 69 Eyes, because it was the album that brought us to the States! That was the album that brought us to Greece as well. We just wanted to make a record that was totally different, we wanted it to be more rock’n’roll… and it actually borrows a lot of elements from the entire The 69 Eyes history. We wanted to make something new, and this is something new. Of course, we felt some pressure, but last night in Thessaloniki it was good to see that the fans there enjoyed the show a lot. Because, nobody buys the records anymore, you don’t know if they even have heard your new album. But, when you are playing for the fans, obviously those people want to move with the songs, sing along, so it’s a great thing to see that at least somebody has heard the record.
We are already planning the next album. Matt Hyde, the producer of Back In Blood, was in Helsinki this week and we were talking about doing the new album with him, and what it would be like, and he said 'let’s do something totally different again, that nobody expects'. That’s a good philosophy, and something that The 69 Eyes have always tried to do… I mean, with Devils, and Angels it was more like a double album, so they are pretty similar, but on the other hand Back In Blood was something different, and now we want to make something different again. It’s exciting for us to keep the band, and the sound, always fresh. Of course it’s The 69 Eyes... We always sound like The 69 Eyes, no matter what we do, but we’re still creative. We don’t think that we have a particular album in our hands that we really want to go back and try to reach the same sound. We are not like some other bands that try to repeat what they achieved with some earlier albums. We are always looking forward…"
