news life in black

As previously reported, Norwegian industrial black metallers V:28 are set to release their new album, VioLution, on September 28th by Vendlus Record's. The album is the final chapter in the V:28 trilogy, which included the albums SoulSaviour and NonAnthropogenic. To hear the song 'Patterns Of The Weak' from the new album, head to this location. The following is an update from guitarist/vocalist Eddie Risdal regarding the process that went into making Violution:

"The album is entitled VioLution... Choking on Black Liquid Death, and it is closing the story of how the world comes to an end. Unlike American movies it sure ain't a pleasant end. Anyway, the process with this album really was a long and tough journey for band chief and sole composer Kristoffer Oustad, as he never accepted anything but the best. It has been a really demanding task for him to create something matching, or better, outdoing the first two albums - 2003's NonAnthropogenic and 2005's SoulSaviour. As far as I can tell you, very subjectively, he has succeeded. The band line-up is as last time Atle Johansen on bass, Kristoffer Oustad on guitars and programming, and me (Eddie Risdal) on vocals and guitars.

The first ideas for the album came just after SoulSaviour was finished, while the last actually were composed whilst recording the album, so we're talking about almost a two year long writing process. Not always effective, but when you simply haven't got any good ideas it is not worth trying, and rather wait for the inspiration to come back. On one hand we've never put a deadline for the album, but it is also important to not have too much time between albums, to avoid people forgetting about us. The recording was done at Oustad's own Forbidden Frequencies Studio, like on the last album. It's nothing fancy. You'll not see heaps of fancy and expensive hardware, though for our part of the job it has nothing to say, as everything is done in the mix. It is also very comfortable and convenient to be in a home studio, as there is no time pressure or rent. After a couple of months of recording, the files were handed over to sound wizard LRZ in his LRZ Lair Studio for mixing. He also mixed the first two albums, so he knows just what we want to achieve. The mix of course turned out fantastic in the end, and after a couple of tries also the final master sounded just how it should.

Guest artists have been an important ingredient since the first release, with an increasing amount of contributors for each release. The main point of using these are not to have any selling points though it may help, but to get the album as good as it can. When each song is musically structured, it is at some parts very obvious that it needed some kind of vocals or effects that someone outside our little trio can create better than us. Because of Oustad's fascination for industrial music, it was natural to look in that direction at some stages. The intro track, 'Exequor', is solely an MZ.412 creation and as mentioned, it is something we would most likely could not have come up with ourselves, though it sets the perfect atmosphere. On my favorites front we got some vocal contribution from Kristoffer 'Garm' Rygg (ULVER), renowned from a bunch of classic Norwegian metal releases. His vocal tracks on 'The Absolute' is nothing that I, or any other vocalist on the planet for that sake, could have done. Fantastic work! Through the album we have guests like Mike VanPortfleet of semi-legendary darkwave band LYCIA who does some vocal parts, so does Ghost of G.G.F.H. while Peter Nyström of NEGRU VODA does some analog noise.

VioLution will be enhanced with a music video for the track 'Shut It Down'. It is made by three students, Ole C. Alfheim, Kim H. Frimanslund and Bjarte Tjeldflåt, at a high school in our neighboring town Grimstad. Our effort was to shoot the band sequences in a chilly tunnel for about five hours one evening, while the students had countless hours making animations, edit and render the stuff into a four minute long music video which has to be some of the best ever created in the genre. At least for a band of our size. A huge thank you to these guys, they were also graded a well deserved A on the task.

A tour to support VioLution had been great, but we have no confirmed dates yet. We have tried to get some gigs between albums, but it is very hard to get any jobs at the time. The fact that we use programmed drums may be one issue that scares people, but also there is a concert activity like never before, at least here in Norway, so it is the venues who can choose which bands they want to book. We don't have to go many years back to find that the situation was quite the opposite and the only place there were regular concerts was in the biggest cities. If you want to see us close to where you live, don't hesitate to tell your local venue to book us! We would very much like to do a little tour in Northern Europe.

A little bit off topic, but mine and Atle Johansen's other band, ANCESTRAL LEGACY, is in the recording process of our first full length album these days. Also this is recorded on our own equipment, while it will be mixed by Knut Magne Valle (ARCTURUS) in October, before we try to get a record deal for it.

So be sure to get your copy of VioLution when it hits the streets. Due to limited distribution, it might be hard to find it in your local record store. You can order it directly from the band at our site V:28.com or our American label Vendlus Records."
