Happy New Year from BraveWords and all the best for a headbanging 2014! To honour tradition, we always follow our annual BravePicks by handing over the pen to our devout scribes and let them speak out about the year that was and the year ahead of us!

CARCASS' Surgical Steel has been making the rounds on year-end lists in the world of metal and is a reflection of the year 2013 in metal as a whole where the old guard (some of which have been dormant for a while) return in full force including bands such as GORGUTS, QUEENSRŸCHE, VOIVOD, BLACK SABBATH and many more! With some of their strongest work in years, reminding us why they hold legendary status and schooling a new generation once again! On the flip side, newer artists were also coloring outside the lines and breaking down genre boundaries set by these legendary forefathers to achieve a sound of their own. This new found creativity also seems to be more accepted by metal fans!
With 2014 around the corner, TRIPTYKON have announced their forthcoming album Melana Chasmata due out in April! If their last album is any indication of what is to come it is bound to be another stellar achievement by Tom G. Warrior! It will be seven years since MAYHEM unleashed Ordo Ad Chao and black metal has changed significantly in the interim. It will be interesting to see where Mayhem end up. One sure-fire prediction is it will cause a lot of talk amongst their fan base! My third prediction is we will see more genre boundaries continue to be stripped away as artists scavenge what they need from various genres at will without the restrictions of old conventions and genre politics allowing for new and exciting sounds!
Geoff Tate … oh how the mighty have fallen.
