A year ago this month, ANAL CUNT frontman Seth Putnam went to a friend's place for a birthday party. Cake and ice cream were not on the menu. In the course of an evening, Seth consumed $200 worth of crack cocaine, an untraceable amount of heroin, and at least a fifth of whiskey, while consorting with a crowd that included pimps, prostitutes, and at least one convicted armed robber. He woke up feeling physically fine but wanting to commit suicide. He bought enough heroin to kill himself, cooked up a hot shot, and then... came to his senses and decided he wanted to live. There was just one problem. He couldn't sleep. So he popped a stash of Ambien - two months' worth - and accidentally fell into a coma. When he was ambulanced to the hospital, doctors said he'd have irreparable brain damage and discussed pulling the plug.

In an exclusive interview with the Phoenix - his first and only interview since coming out of his coma - extreme metal's most notorious fuck up talks about what happened the night of his overdose, why his family fought to keep his condition a secret, and how he's determined to be the same asshole he's always been.

Phoenix: Did you have any awareness at all [when you were in a coma]?

Seth Putnam: “I had a whole bunch of dreams that didn’t make any sense, and then I woke up for some reason being in a hospital. I had some dreams of some things that weren’t real because they didn’t happen, you know?”

Phoenix: Like what?

SP: “I had a dream my ex-wife was there with her little sister, and she doesn’t have a little sister, you know? And I had a dream that my girlfriend was replaced by her twin sister that she doesn’t have or something like that. And I had a dream that I was hanging out with a bunch of people, we were watching an English TV show or something like that.”

Phoenix: And then you woke up and you were in the hospital?

SP: “Yeah. They wanted to pull the plug on me there, and my mother said no. They said there’s no activity in my brain, that I’d totally be a vegetable for the rest of my life and stuff like that, and my mother was like, fuck that. And she took me out of there... and I eventually got put into Spaulding Rehab... My first memory of being alert was in Spaulding Hospital. I remember asking my girlfriend to take me out to go get some beer or something like that. And she’s like ‘No, you can’t.’ And I thought she was just being a cunt and saying no, I’m like, ‘Why not?’ And she’s like, ‘Well, you can’t go.’ And I’m like, ‘Why not?’ I realized the schedule, I realized no one would be in to check on me for an hour and a half, ‘Come on we can go,’ and I had this dream about a liquor store around the corner that didn’t exist, and she was like, ‘No,’ and then she just gave in, she goes, ‘Okay, well, just get up and we’ll go then,’ and I tried to get up and I realized I couldn’t move. You know, my whole body couldn’t move.”
