According to Wikipedia, the 2011 Sendai earthquake and tsunami was a 9.0 megathrust earthquake off the coast of Japan that occurred at 14:46 JST on Friday, March 11th which triggered tsunami warnings and evacuations from Japan's Pacific coast and at least 20 countries, including the entire Pacific coast of North America and South America. The earthquake created tsunami waves of up to 10 meters (33 ft) that struck Japan. The Japanese National Police Agency has officially confirmed 1353 deaths, but estimated numbers are far higher.
Members of the metal community have expressed their thoughts and condolences to the Japanese people:

URIAH HEEP: "Our thoughts and hopes are with the Japanese people today. We have made many friends over the years in your wonderful country. Once again we were overwhelmed by your friendship and hospitality only a few months ago during the band's last visit to Japan.
