Melodic death metal frontman John Strachan of THE FUNERAL PYRE admits he’s pretty darn cynical when it comes to bands.

“I’d be lying if I said I was the most open minded guy when it comes to music,” he said in a phone interview. “I hate to admit it but I am jaded.”

With good reason, though. Growing up in Los Angeles and jumping in to the cut-throat music industry can do that to a person. Even so, Strachan wanted to break into the scene with his death metal entourage to prove a point.

“As a fan of metal I see a lot of fans go through the motions,” said the singer, who odes double duty as a sales and mail order associate at Prosthetic Records. “Either that or they lose the passion they once has.”

He wanted to carry the torch for pioneers who laid the foundation, like Gorgoroth, Emperor even the Misfits who really put on a show.

“Playing live is a sacred ritual,” he said. “If you don’t do it right people aren’t going to respect you.

“If I see a band that plays with no heart, why would I buy their records?”
