VELVET REVOLVER, ASIA Make Time's Top 10 Supergroups List
March 9, 2010, 14 years ago
VELVET REVOLVER and ASIA have made Time's Top 10 Supergroups of all time list. The entries (with Time commentary) read as follows:
#8 - Velvet Revolver
In 2004 the VH1 program Inside Out: The Rise of Velvet Revolver chronicled how former GUNS N' ROSES members - guitarist Slash, bassist Duff McKagan and drummer Matt Sorum - held auditions a year earlier in search of a lead singer for their new group. The group recorded its first album Contraband in late 2003 with tracks like "Fall to Pieces" and "Set Me Free," which appeared on the soundtrack for the movie Hulk. They followed that up with 2007's Libertad, but shortly thereafter announced that Weiland would be leaving the band because of "erratic behavior" most likely tied to his ongoing struggle with drug abuse. Rumors have swirled over the past several years about who might become the new frontman, but so far, no deals have been made.
#6 - Asia
Formed in 1981, supergroup Asia consisted of bassist and vocalist John Wetton (KING CRIMSON), drummer Carl Palmer (EMERSON, LAKE & PALMER), keyboardist Geoff Downes (THE BUGGLES) and guitarist Steve Howe (YES). In 1982, the quartet put out their self-titled debut album, which resulted in several hit songs including 'Heat Of The Moment', 'Only Time Will Tell' and 'Sole Survivor'. Asia became one of the most played acts on MTV that year. Wetton briefly left the band in 1984 and Howe soon followed. Over the years, the band regrouped several times with new members, though the original four announced recently that they will release a new album Omega this May.
