One-man death metal maestro Cameron Argon, 23, is the brainchild behind DISFIGURING THE GODDESS. In addition, Argon’s alter ego fronts an electronic dance music (EDM) project called BIG CHOCOLATE. His expertise in studio remixing and electronica skills serves him well in Disfiguring The Goddess. Sound sequences and orchestral samples compliment his unique take on the standard death metal formula on its seven-track sophomore effort, Deprive.

Argon is ambitious and focused with his art. On Deprive, he writes, records, produces, and sings, as well as plays all of the instruments (the drums are programmed). Argon might be young, but he doesn’t lack direction and he’s not at all arrogant about the music he creates. He’s not too worried about what people think what death metal should sound like, either.

“I like to be really creative with it,” Argon said. “I’m not trying to please anybody. I’m trying to have fun making music. One of my favorite parts about Disfiguring The Goddess is working with all the experimental elements. I just enjoy it and I don’t want to feel like I shouldn’t be able do that because it makes it less real death metal. I just don’t care. I think it sounds cool and I just like doing it.”

Argon has been in only one other band before DTG. He previously fronted the death metal band BURNING THE MASSES and has done studio work consisting of remixing tracks for bands such as SUICIDE SILENCE, AS I LAY DYING and WHITECHAPEL.

Speaking of Suicide Silence, Argon at one time lived near the now-deceased vocalist Mitch Lucker and became friends. Of course, Lucker’s death in 2012 came as a shock to Argon.

“I was in California that October right before he passed away and stopped by his place for a little bit. I used to live down the street from him and that’s when we started hanging out and making music together. I then moved back to Nevada to get more focused on music, that’s when I was offered to play on the Warped Tour as a solo artist. I kept doing my own thing and he kept doing his own thing. We were working on some demos right before he passed. I wanted to go and get some work done on it but we just never had the time to do it. We never planned on him passing away.”

Argon participated in the Mitch Lucker memorial show which will be immortalized on the new DVD, Ending Is The Beginning: The Mitch Lucker Memorial Show (released Feb. 18 through Century Media). Argon, under the moniker of Big Chocolate, sings on the song ‘Disengage’ from the band’s 2009 No Time To Bleed. The rest of Lucker’s bandmates played while guest vocalists covered Suicide Silence songs. A lot of big-name metal vocalists participated in the event, but Argon felt a bit apprehensive that day as he explains.

“It was fantastic. It was just a celebration of his life. Everyone was just really into it. All the vocalists were flown in one-by-one and we all stayed at the same hotel and hung out. It was fun. It was crazy for me because all these other guys were metal vocalists and sing in established metal bands. But I don’t sing metal or front bands. That was the first time in America that I ever sang metal vocals on a stage.”

With an array of technology at one’s disposal these days, musicians are free to create at will. And the DIY work ethos has never been more prominent in the music industry as it is now.

“I’m not even trying to get a record label,” Argon said. “I like doing this myself and I know how to do this stuff. All the resources are available. With the internet, you can distribute it and have an audience at the same time. I enjoy doing it myself and calling my own shots. DTG has been just like a metal project for me. These last two albums was kind of a big thing for me. I  definitely felt different about it this time around. After working on Big Chocolate the past two years and playing heavily around the world, I’m kind of learning how to do this and I’m learning as I go. I feel like I’m coming into my own now, especially with these last two Disfiguring albums. I felt I knew what I was doing for the first time. I don’t feel any pressure to get a label or play in a band just because people want me to. At the end of the day, I do what I want to do. And this is exactly what I do — I do whatever I want.”

At the moment, Argon is afforded the luxury of taking some time off and doing some traveling before he resumes his weekend DJing gig back in Seattle. “I don’t really know what’s going to be next,” Argon concludes. “DTG is just a studio thing, there’s no band. It’s just me, literally creating music. As far as what I’m going to do next, just stay tuned because I don’t even know what I’m going to do. I’m anxious to find out myself!”
