Kathy McCabe from Heraldsun.com.au is reporting:

If Angus Young had taken the advice of a fellow apprentice more than 35 years ago, the rock world would have been robbed of one of its greatest guitar heroes. Sydney printer Ron Adam will never forget the day he tried to persuade the teenage guitarist not to give up his day job in pursuit of his AC/DC dream.

The Young family lived in the same street as the Byrnes Publishing Company and after Angus, 15, quit Ashfield High, he wandered into the factory asking for an apprenticeship.

"He was going through his sharpies phase in his high-waisted Levis, braces and boots and shaven head but he still looked like a little boy," Mr Adam said. "He was taken on for a four-year apprenticeship as a compositor - the boys really liked Angus.

"I remember his first tech report said Angus had a bright future in the printing trade."

The nascent rock god saved his money to buy a prized Gibson SG guitar from the local Chord Music shop and Mr Adam remembers Young was impressive, showing off his chops in his bedroom at lunchtime or after work.

"That guitar cost a lot but he loved his music and was very passionate about it," Mr Adam said. On Tuesday nights, the workmates would have to stay back late to do the classified ad sections for the local newspapers.

"We'd have hot chips for dinner and, of course, Angus would have a cigarette dangling out of his mouth, the ash falling all over the type plates," Mr Adam said.

As AC/DC built their reputation in Sydney's clubs, including the famed Chequers, the band were offered bigger tours that would make holding down a day job difficult.

"One day Angus came to me and said, 'Ron, I'm leaving work to go on tour with Malcolm in this band called AC/DC'," Mr Adam said. "I told him he was mad. He only had six months to go of his apprenticeship and I told him if the band didn't work out, then at least he would have something to fall back on.
