According to TMZ, Mike Starr's memorial is going down today at Seattle's Space Needle where the family and friends have planned an awesome water fountain tribute show for the former ALICE IN CHAINS bassist.

Mike's sister, Melinda Starr, tells TMZ that everyone is gathering around International Fountain - next to the Space Needle - where a water show is usually set to classical music... but for the memorial it'll be rocking to Alice In Chains tunes.

Melinda says officials at Seattle Center offered to change the music for the memorial - and adds Seattle Police are providing security, free of charge. She also says some of Mike's old Alice In Chains mates will also be at the tribute - which is open to the public and begins at 4 PM.

TMZ last week reported that Mike Starr won't be getting a funeral for another few weeks - the medical examiner put the family's burial plans on hold in order to perform more tests on Starr's body. Once his body is back in the family's possession, sources say they plan to hold two funeral services - one for fans, and one for family.

According to his mother Gayle, the official public gathering/memorial for Mike Starr will be held this Sunday, March 20th at The Fountain (Seattle Center) in Seattle, Washington starting at 4 PM. Details:

According to The Salt Lake Tribune, Mike Starr had addiction problems, but was on the road to recovery and didn’t commit suicide, two of his friends said the day after the former Alice in Chains bassist was found dead (March 8th) in a Salt Lake City house.

Starr, who played bass for the seminal Seattle grunge band from its formation in 1987 to 1993, died nearly three weeks after being arrested by Salt Lake City police on February 18.

"I don’t think this was a suicide," said Brett Gunn of Salt Lake City, Starr’s Alcoholics Anonymous sponsor. "We had a lot of plans."

Starr was living in the 1900 block of Richards Street with Spencer Roddan, a fellow musician who had known Starr for several years after being introduced to him by a friend, Travis Meeks (DAYS OF THE NEW). Roddan and Meeks met while in rehab at Utah’s Cirque Lodge Drug Rehab Center in Sundance.

"I don’t think [his death] was intentional," said Roddan. "Our deal was he had to be clean. He said he was going to make me proud."

Starr has been living with Roddan for about six weeks. He and Meeks had been making music in Roddan’s basement recording studio. Meeks had booked shows on the East Coast the weekend of March 18, Roddan said, and Starr was going to join him on the road.

Starr had other musical plans, Gunn said. He wanted to collaborate with Gunn’s Salt Lake City band NAZTY HABIT, and had spoken of playing with hard-rock bands P.O.D. and KORN.

Starr appeared on Alice In Chains' most successful albums including the band's debut Facelift (1990), Sap (1992) and Dirt (1992). Starr later played bass for the band SUN RED SUN, which featured Ray Gillen and Bobby Rondinelli, both former members of BLACK SABBATH. The project was cut short by Gillen's death in 1993.
