BW&BK Exclusive: Former DREAM THEATER Vocalist CHARLIE DOMINICI - "I Wanted O3 - Part 2 To Be A Bridge From When Dream And Day Unite"
February 22, 2007, 17 years ago
In a recent interview with BW&BK;, former DREAM THEATER vocalist Charlie Dominici discussed his return to the prog-rock world with his new DOMINICI album, O3: A Trilogy - Part 2. The following is a excerpt from the interview:
"The only references that were ever made to Dream Theater during the recordings of O3 - Part 2 were made by me," says Dominici of whether or not his new bandmates wrote with his Dream Theater past in mind. "I mentioned a couple times that I wanted this album to sound like the follow-up to When Dream And Day Unite, but not by Dream Theater, by me. Sort of like if I had gone in to record When Dream And Day Unite, fired John (Petrucci/guitars) and Mike (Portnoy/drums), then hired these guys (laughs). That’s really where I was coming from with this album. I wanted O3 - Part 2 to be a bridge from When Dream And Day Unite. I wanted it to be as if all the album after When Dream And Day Unite didn’t exist, that this was the second album. And it really is. It’s the second album I’ve done in a progressive rock band.”With regards to When Dream And Day Unite's near legendary status amongst prog-metal fans almost 20 years after its release, Dominici says he's not the least bit surprised by it.
"I was given a demo tape of a band called Majesty on a rainy night at a gas station where I met their manager at the time - I think they had fired (orginal vocalist) Chris Collins the month before – and their playing was sloppy. If you listen to that tape you have to listen really hard to realize what their potential was. When I first heard it I thought ‘Can these guys actually play or are they so good that they’re not able to play what they want to play?’ Which is what it turned out to be. I heard the potential, and I remember telling my girlfriend at the time that this band was going to be huge, that they had to catch up with their own feet and then the world had to catch up to them. After I heard them play ‘Ytse Jam’ at rehearsal for the first time I knew I had to join the band, and I wasn’t even into that kind of music at the time."
