Dynamite Entertainment has become quite the iconoclastic publisher in its tenth year, releasing comic books featuring Doc Savage, Flash Gordon, the Gold Key characters including Solar, Man of the Atom and Turok, Dinosaur Hunter and the newly-announced Django/Zorro crossover. But its latest news takes things to a different level.

According to HollywoodReporter.com, the New Jersey-based publisher has announced the upcoming release of an ongoing comic book starring Alice Cooper, to be written by X-Files writer Joe Harris with art by Eman Casallos, that recasts the rock legend as the guardian of humanity’s dreams.

“Artistically, for me there is hardly a better medium,” Cooper said in a statement accompanying the announcement. “There is so much you can do in the form of a comic that we'd never been able to do on stage. It's just a different way of storytelling, and it really has almost limitless possibilities. We're looking forward to stretching the existing boundaries of the comic medium again. We have new stories to tell, but we'll do it with the same theatrical, sinister sensibility that comes with the name ‘Alice Cooper'. This is just the beginning! Welcome to my new Nightmares!”

Cooper has a long history in the comic book medium, having previously appeared in issues of Marvel Premiere in the 1970s, as well as the 1990s miniseries Alice Cooper: The Last Temptation, written by Neil Gaiman (Dynamite will also be re-releasing that latter book in a deluxe edition this October). Alice Cooper No. 1 will be released in comic book stores and digitally this September.
