QUO VADIS - Day Into Night

God damn, Quebec rules for metal. I guess when you have heavyweights like Cryptopsy and Kataklysm around you can't afford to be half-assed like most Canuck metal sadly is. Quo Vadis (bad name, hard to say) aren't quite up to the levels of the aforementioned, but still rise above most Canadian bands. There is a lot happening here, from straight ahead death metal to acoustic parts, to fast melodic Swedish-sounding songs, some serious Kataklysm influence and one song, 'I Believe', that would fit nicely on one of the later-era Carcass records. The production is great, double-bass drums pounding heavy and proud and vocalist Yanic growling, whispering, speaking and screaming nicely over the whole thing. Bad timing on the label's part, releasing this the same time as the new Kataklysm, which overshadows this even if it is quite different. Quo Vadis are a band to watch in the next few years, and one of the few Canadian metal bands not currently making us all look goofy.
