WAKEN EYES - Exodus

Waken Eyes is an impressive modern prog metal project created by relatively unknown Canadian guitarist/composer Tom Frelek. On its debut full-length release, Exodus, Frelek recruited the talents of bassist Michael Lepond (Symphony X), drummer extraordinaire Marco Minnemann (The Aristocrats, Steven Wilson, Joe Satriani) and the very talented vocalist Henrik Båth (Darkwater). It’s an impressive lineup, and although each members’ parts were recorded separately and pieced together through e-mail while never stepping into the studio together, it sounds as if the foursome have been playing together for years.

Instrumental opener “Cognition” pulsates with a strong tribal drum rudiment and eerie keyboard harmonies, creating an explosive buildup. “Aberration” is a mid-paced prog rocker recalling Pink Floyd, Arena and Dream Theater decorated with Spanish guitar melodies á la Al Di Meola, who Frelek is heavily influenced by. Throughout the record, Frelek displays an extraordinary technique and style with his guitar playing and orchestral arrangements. Drawing inspiration from soundtracks and film composers, the tracks take on a moody and dark dynamic with a cinematic scope. Closer “Exodus” is an epic, 18-plus minute track based on Frelek’s grandparent’s experience in WWII, which has spoken word segment from Franklin D Roosevelt’s famous first inauguration speech and a middle section consisting of a breakdown with classical instruments. Exodus is an impressive release and hopefully plans for some Waken Eyes concerts will come to fruition. Imagine how mind blowing it would be to hear these songs live?
