ZAC CRAIN - Black Tooth Grin: The High Life, Good Times, And Tragic End Of “Dimebag” Darrell

Named after Dime’s signature drink – a shot or more of Crown Royal with a splash of Coca-Cola – Black Tooth Grin is the first unauthorized biography of the late Pantera and Damageplan guitarist. This 300-page paperback, supplemented by 16 pages of black and white photos, not only chronicles, but also celebrates the remarkable achievements and unique experiences that filled Dime’s life until a crazed gunman took it from him on December 8, 2004 at the Alrosa Villa in Columbus, Ohio. Going back to the early days when Dime and his brother, drummer Vinnie Paul, were just kids, to the beginnings of Pantera with original vocalist Terry Glaze, the one-of-a-kind story is lovingly told and accurately recounted. Even as his fame and fortune grew – Dime didn’t change. He never lost the mindset of a fan. As such, he always went out of the way to take care of those who supported him. Dime’s significance as a guitarist can never be overstated. Similarly, enough cannot be said about his incredible energy, vivacious spirit and mischievous sense of humour. “Banging out riffs and pounding shots were who he was… rumbling through life like Peter Pan at the wheel of a monster truck… Darrell never grew up and nobody wanted him to.” Black Tooth Grin provides a true sense of who Dime was and what it was like to be around him. His “natural talent and unnatural dedication” created an unmistakable sound that went hand in hand with living it up like there was no tomorrow. Unlike the majority of unauthorized biographies that essentially amount to nothing more than a quick cash-grab, this book has been well researched. Although no new interviews were conducted with surviving Pantera/Damageplan members or Dime’s long-time girl Rita, it’s definitely worth reading.
